Guardian Rumour Mill

Daniel Harris

It’s been a thrilling few days in the sport of transfers, but the riveting battle to see which of Liverpool and Chelsea will pay the more ludicrous fee for Moisés Caicedo is over. After much soul-searching, the Ecuadorian has decided that Todd Boehly’s visionary strategy of bussing as much money as possible is too compelling to refuse, so will therefore move to Stamford Bridge. All that remains now is for Jürgen Klopp to fist-pump the Kop in the process of accepting defeat with his customary good grace.

Nor is that the end of things. Liverpool are still trying to sign Roméo Lavia from Southampton – but so are Chelsea, who have already registered an offer. At the time, £55m was the highest number Boehly could think of, but the Mill has full confidence that, if it comes to it, he can shout out something even sillier.

Consequently, Liverpool’s search for a holding midfielder continues, with Ibrahim Sangaré the latest to be advised that kicking a ball about in L4 is somehow more cosmically crucial than doing the exact same thing anywhere else in the world. PSV Eindhoven have already rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest, and there is now competition from Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, but Klopp will hope the guaranteed success those clubs offer is offset by the purple wheelie bin that will be his if he moves to Anfield.

Down the East Lancs Road, Manchester United are also seeking a player for that position. Their interest in Sofyan Amrabat is “well documented”, but they also quite fancy Amadou Onana of Everton who, is, er … tall. Should the quoted fee prove prohibitive, Erik ten Hag will turn his attention to Shaquille O’Neal, Robert Wadlow or a sentient lamp post.

Ten Hag is also on the search for utility defender not quite good enough to play right-back or centre-back. He was hoping Benjamin Pavard would fill this glaring, John O’Shea-shaped hole in his squad, but Bayern have rejected United’s opening bid of three buttons and an Astro Belt.

Across Manchester, Kyle Walker is expected to stay at City – in the process, rejecting a move to Bayern, unseduced by the prospect of Harry Kane’s dressing-room chat. Meantime, Cirty’s pursuit of Lucas Paquetá continues, but if they are unable to agree a fee with West Ham, they will turn their attention to Michael Olise of Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere, Tottenham – searching for a Kane replacement – are naturally considering a move for another striker who really prefers Arsenal. Folarin Balogun is the man in question, but following his fine season at Reims, he will not be shy of options.

In other centre-forward news, Chuba Akpom has decided that Amsterdam beats Middlesbrough, so will exchange his parmo for a waffle by joining Ajax for £10m, while Juventus are in talks with Chelsea over the purchase of Romelu Lukaku on the basis that they no longer play any big games in which he can vanish.

And finally, Neymar is apparently the latest player to decide that actually, he hasn’t always dreamt of matches against Le Havre and Lorient, but of the unrivalled atmosphere at Al-Shabab and Damac. As such, reports suggest he has agreed a two-year contract worth £138m with Al-Hilal – who still need to agree a fee with PSG.

West Ham CONFIRM £30m signing of England midfielder James Ward-Prowse from Southampton on a four-year contract

By Adam Shergold

West Ham have completed the £30million signing of England midfielder James Ward-Prowse from Southampton.

Ward-Prowse, 28, departs his boyhood club in the wake of their relegation from the Premier League, having scored 55 goals in 410 appearances.

He will link up with David Moyes at the London Stadium as the Hammers compensate for the departure of star midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal.

They also completed the signing of Ajax's Edson Alvarez for £35.4m last week.

Ward-Prowse will wear the No 7 shirt and has signed a contract until June 2027. He could make his debut against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

'I'm buzzing to be here at West Ham United. It's great to be here and I'm looking forward to getting going,' Ward-Prowse told the club's website.

'From the outside looking in, this is a club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the UEFA Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this club.

'It's great to be a part of it and I can't wait to play my role in the games to come.

'When I think about my game, it is based on hard work, graft, and giving 100 per cent. West Ham United has always been a club that has epitomises that.

'You can feel that from the fans and you can see it in the players who are here and the lads that have come through the academy too.

'I feel as though I will fit straight in and I can promise I will give my all for this football club in my time here.'

Moyes added: 'I'm delighted to bring a player of James' quality and experience to West Ham United.

'He's performed to a very high level in the Premier League over the last decade, constantly producing good numbers season after season.

'His leadership qualities are obviously another huge plus for us – he'll be a big voice for us, someone who drives the team on from the middle of the pitch.

'We're excited to get him up and running, for what will be another busy season on both the domestic and European front.'

West Ham hold interest in ‘new Luka Modric’, Barcelona have tried to sign him

Lucas Arnold

West Ham United are interested in signing Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer as a possible replacement for Lucas Paqueta.

That’s according to the MailOnline’s Transfer Confidential who also confirmed that Paqueta is eager to leave.

Majer has just heard he might have to play for David Moyes

Whilst a Paqueta departure is not likely to excite West Ham fans, a move for Lovro Majer really could.

The 25-year-old Croatian has previously attracted the interest of multiple top clubs including FC Barcelona.

The midfielder, who is mainly praised for his attacking qualities, does have a similar profile to Paqueta in a lot of respects.

Majer is usually deployed in similar roles to Paqueta when playing in Ligue 1, even if West Ham would be a step up.

Although West Ham are unfortunately looking likely to lose a number of stars this summer, it does seem they are finally cracking on with replacements.

The midfield revamp has continued today with the confirmation of James Ward-Prowse’s signature.

Alongside Edson Alvarez, Ward-Prowse will go some way to replacing Declan Rice, just as Lovro Majer may be intended to with Lucas Paqueta.

Due to starting his career at Dinamo Zagreb and possessing similar qualities, Lovro Majer is often touted as the ‘new Luka Modric’.

And whilst that is a lofty comparison, Majer has been putting in displays that Modric would surely be proud of.

It’s something of a surprise that Majer is still a Rennes player given all the interest he’s had whilst at the French club.

And whilst West Ham will undoubtedly have other targets on their list, a pursuit of Majer would look well-advised.

The Croatian international now has 21 caps for his country and is steadily showing progress year by year.

And if Majer does end up fulfilling even half of the potential of Croatian superstar Luka Modric then he’ll be doing very well.

No club wants to lose a player like Paqueta, but if West Ham pursue Majer they could be executing a brilliant damage limitation plan.
